One of the most important figures of the 20th century is no more. South Africa's former president died Dec. 5, 2013, at the age of 95 years. Sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964, Nelson Mandela became a legendary figure in the struggle against apartheid and racial oppression. On 9 May 1994, he was elected president of South Africa in the first free, multiracial elections in the country's history. He retired from politics five years later, before engaging in the fight against HIV / AIDS. July 18 is now the "Nelson kontajner Mandela International Day".
